Spring Picnic
February 9, 2007
By Greg Cardey
Due to the recent scheduling change during the SOQ weekend of including a
Junior Jackpot show the CSBA and CJSA haves decided to discontinue having a
Spring Jackpot show. Instead we will be reviving the tradition of a breeder
hosting a Spring Picnic at their ranch each year. Dennis Pluth’s Homestead
Ranch in Clearlake, CA will be hosting us this year on April 21st.
Dennis recommends staying at the motel Lake Point Lodge, which is about a
mile away from the ranch. There is a large Bass Tournament in the area over
the weekend, so Dennis advises to call early for rooms at 707-998-4350 and
refer to CSA or Pluth.
Weekend Schedule
Friday P.M. – No host cocktail hour at Happy Garden Restaurant and Oriental
dinner at Pluth’s ranch.
Saturday A.M. – Breakfast at Pluth’s followed by ranch tours.
Saturday Noon – Tri Tip lunch followed by more tours of ranch. Saturday P.M.
– Fun at the Homestead Ranch Bar and Juke Box, music by Cliff???
Call or email Dennis Pluth with questions, his info is on following page.
See you there!!
President’s Message
By Gary Witte
Hello from Nevada! We find ourselves in an unusual winter. From below zero
temps in mid-January to Spring like temps the first of February. Winter
seems to be passing us by for now. Calving has begun here and in California
but little green grass is showing in the California hills.
The Spring get-together for the CSBA this year will be in the form of a
Ranch Tour April 21st at Dennis Pluth’s Homestead Ranch in Clearlake, CA.
Festivities will actually begin on Friday night with a no-host cocktail hour
followed by a fabulous Chinese dinner, complements of Homestead Ranch.
Saturday will find us at the ranch for tours, cattle, tri-tip lunch and lots
of good company. See the details in Greg’s announcement elsewhere in this
newsletter.
For those of you who did not make it to Denver for the National Western
Stock Show last month, we were happy to see a wide variety of Shorthorn
cattle from across the nation. Yes, it was very cold temperature wise but
the warmth of seeing many good friends and Shorthorn breeders kept the
weather at bay.
A note of importance. A West Coast Shorthorn Breeder’s Directory is in the
process of being compiled. You all should have received information
regarding advertising and inclusion in this publication. If you have not,
please contact Kirk Kimmulshue at kkimmels@calpoly.edu. Breeding excellent
cattle is our goal but if no one can find you or your cattle is does little
good. This directory effort is being spearheaded by Kirk Kimmelshue and
technically supported by Heidi Beljean of the Pacific Showcase magazine and
can be a first step to bringing buyers to your gate.
A final note: Each Shorthorn breeder is responsible for producing and
marketing the best product possible, for breeding, show or consumption. It
is MY opinion, and that of my wife, that Witte Shorthorns will neither sell
nor produce ANY TH positive cattle. We are in the process of testing any
suspect animals in our herd. Those who show positive will be marketed either
feeders or butcher animals. This is our choice and one that we feel is best
for the breed. Think about it. Your decision on this subject will determine
the future of the Shorthorn breed in California.
Hope to see you all in April at Pluth’s Homestead Ranch. Keep in mind that
this is a family event. Bring the kids and have a great Spring Weekend!

SOQ
SALE DATE
There will be no
change in SOQ sale date and location this year. The SOQ sale will again be
held the last Saturday in October, so this year the sale weekend will be
October 27th-28th.
The sale will continue to be held in Plymouth at the Amador County
Fairgrounds. The Junior Jackpot show will be held again as entries and
attendance were great for the initial show. Let’s look forward to keeping
the positive momentum going!
WEST COAST SHORTHORN BREEDERS DIRECTORY
Several breeders
for the past few years have been asking for a nice directory for Shorthorns
out here. Kirk Kimmelshue has taken the initiative to get it done. The
directory will be paid for with ads in the directory. The more ads we get
the more copies we can print and distribute to potential buyers of our
cattle! Ad prices range from $70-$450 and must be postmarked by March 31st,
2007. If you haven’t already received the information from Kirk in the mail
or if you have any questions contact him at 530-570-1515 or kkimmels@calpoly.edu.
A LOSS IN THE SHORTHORN FAMILY
Don Hoyt, Shorthorn
Breeder from Wyoming passed away recently. He was a good friend to many of
the Shorthorn breeders in California and will be missed.
MEMBERSHIP DRIVE!!!
Those of you
Seniors who were NOT at Plymouth last fall (you know who you are!), please
fill out and mail back the CSBA Membership form along with your tax
deductible CSBA membership dues. Also feel free to pass the form along to
Shorthorn breeders who should be members!
