Junior Spring Jackpot Show
Merced Fairgrounds

By Greg Cardey

April 8, 2006

The 2006 CSBA Spring Junior Jackpot Show and Membership Barbeque will be held Saturday, April 8th, at the Merced Fairgrounds.

Registration and Steer Weigh-in will be from 7:00-9:00 a.m. The show schedule will be steers at 9:30, followed by Shorthorn heifers, Sweepstakes classes and finishing with showmanship. Steer and heifer entries are $25 each. There will be 3 age divisions of showmanship. The steer show will include both a Shorthorn/ShorthornX division and an All Other Breeds division also. In order for an exhibitor to show a steer in the All Other Breeds division that exhibitor must also exhibit a Shorthorn heifer or steer.

There will also be Sweepstakes shows for all show-age females and steers purchased directly by Juniors at the 2005 SOQ Sale. Premiums will begin at $500 for First Place for heifers and $250 for steers.

Jr. exhibitors can bring any bedding they desire but are required to clean their own stalls after the show. See details at: http://www.californiashorthornjuniors.org/springshow.htm

President's Message
By: Gary Witte

Happy New Year to all of you in the CSBA. As I write this we are enjoying a bit of warmth inside before going back out to brave the elements. We never know what Mother Nature will bring us and as you all know the past few weeks it has been un-spring like to be sure. So much for global warming!

Thanks to all of those who attended and enjoyed our Spotlight On Quality sale last fall at Plymouth. The sale was a huge success as we ended up with record high averages for both heifers and steers. AND we all had a great time enjoying a weekend with our Shorthorn enthusiast friends. The barn party on Friday night was a great, special thanks go out to the food preparers (Gipes, Dennis and Cliff) and to the entertainment provided by Jessie Valdez.

We also would like to welcome Chad Noble to the CSBA Board of Directors. The board is always happy to see enthusiastic members looking to provide several years of service. Thanks also go out to Mike Albiani for many terms of service to the CSBA Board. Don’t think you are done for this lifetime Mike!

A major topic at the Board meeting was the presence of TH (Tibial Hemimelia) in several leading Shorthorn sires. Careful consideration should be given before using any of these sires. Please see ASA’s website, www.shorthorn.org  for more information about TH and the policies in place.

Spring calving season is already upon us! However, please make a point to keep Saturday, April 8th available for the annual Spring Picnic and Jr. Show at the Merced Fairgrounds. It may seem a long way off, but it will be here before we know it.

President, CSBA

Here and There

SOQ SALE DATE

At long last there will be no change in SOQ sale date and location this year. The SOQ sale will again be held the last Sunday in October, so this year the sale weekend will be October 28th-29th.
The sale will continue to be held in Plymouth at the Amador County Fairgrounds. It worked out well last year as we had our highest average sale ever so we look forward to keeping the positive momentum going!

A LOSS IN THE SHORTHORN FAMILY

It is with a heavy heart that I pass on the news that Marge Fanconi, Sherri Gipe’s mother, has passed away on Saturday, March 11th.
Marge, along with her husband Bennie, were very active for years in the Shorthorn industry and local junior events and activities.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE!!!

Those of you Seniors who were NOT at Plymouth last fall (you know who you are!), please fill out and mail back the CSBA Membership form along with your tax deductible CSBA membership dues. Also feel free to pass the form along to Shorthorn breeders who should be members!
