The 2005 CSBA Spring Junior Jackpot Show and Membership Barbeque will be
held Saturday, April 9th, at the Merced Fairgrounds.
Registration and Steer Weigh-in will be from
7:00-9:00 a.m. The show schedule will be steers at 9:30, followed by
Shorthorn heifers, AOB heifers and finishing with showmanship. Steer and
heifer entries are $25 each. There will be 3 age divisions of
showmanship. The steer show will include both a Shorthorn/ShorthornX
division and an All Other Breeds division also. In order for an exhibitor
to show a steer in the All Other Breeds division that exhibitor must also
exhibit a Shorthorn heifer or steer.
There will also be a Sweepstakes show for all show-age females
purchased directly by Juniors at the 2004 SOQ Sale. Premiums will begin
at $500 for First Place.
Jr. exhibitors can bring any bedding they desire but are required to
clean their own stalls after the show. Call Chantelle Albiani at
916-689-1545 for more details about the show.

Happy New Year to all of you in the CSBA. As I write this we are enjoying
some sunshine for the first time in many, many days! Cold foggy weather
moved into Northern Nevada in early December and except for a day or two
we have had no relief since. Those of you who attended the Ranch Tour in
January will remember the “pogonip” that covered everything, including the
cattle! A special “Thank You” to the Albaugh family for their warm
hospitality and excellent hot lunch. Thank you also to all who
participated in the tour and the board members who stayed for the
meeting. Although we did not have enough board members for a quorum, many
issues were discussed. Dates have been finalized for the 2005 Spotlight
on Quality Sale that will be held once again in Plymouth CA. The Sale
will be held on the final weekend in October, on October 30th.
Also discussed was the color of consignment animals to the SOQ sale and
Shorthorns exhibited at CSBA sanctioned jackpot shows for the Juniors. A
major concern to all Shorthorn breeders is the presence of TH (Tibial
Hemimelia) in several leading Shorthorn sires. Careful consideration
should be given before using any of these sires. (Listed on page 8,
January issue of the Shorthorn Country).
Spring calving season is already upon us! However, please make a point to
keep Saturday, April 9th available for the annual Spring Picnic
and Jr. Show at the Merced Fairgrounds. It may seem a long way off, but
it will be here before we know it!

SOQ SALE DATE
The CSBA Board of Directors has
decided to take advantage of the Cow Palace moving to a spring show from
now on and stake out a claim to a sale weekend of our very own. The SOQ
sale from now on will be held the last Sunday in October, so this year the
sale weekend will be October 29th-30th.
The sale will continue to be
held in Plymouth at the Amador County Fairgrounds. This should be a more
opportune time to sell steers to Juniors and will be fun as well as it
will always be right around Halloween.

Jr. Corner:
By CJSA Pres. Tim

Welcome to the New Year Juniors, Seniors and Shorthorn enthusiasts. When
the clock struck midnight on Dec. 31st, 2004, how many of us
stopped to really think about what it meant between our sips of Sparkling
Apple Cider or Champaign. It didn’t mean that it was time to replace that
calendar time or to set another new years resolution. It really meant to
look back at all the great times we had over the last year and look
forward to the next 365 days.
The juniors are in for an exciting yet sad
year in 2005. We are loosing our advisor of 13 years. Jeannene sadly
resigned at the last meeting because she was moving away to Texas. Texas
trader, I like to say. She will be missed. But just like the clock
striking midnight on New Years, every new beginning starts at the end of
an old beginning. Although we are sad about Jeannene’s resignation, we
are also excited about our new advisors Chantelle Albiani and Kris Gudel
and what they can bring to our organization.
Our last meeting was one of the longest
ever lasting at least an hour not including the fun wreath and Christmas
tree decorating that took place. We discussed many important things
including our Spring Show, association sign, our new website, our new
membership brochure, and most importantly, elections. Congratulations
goes out to our new officer team, President— Tim Whitfield, Vice
President— Stephanie Weaver, Secretary— Kirk Kimmelshue, Treasurer— Amy
Gipe, Reporter— Alex Xanthus, and our three Activities Directors— Sierra
Meyers, Maulle McCallister, and Jordan Albiani.
Last but not least our annual Spring Junior
Show, Barbeque, and Senior meeting is happening April 9, 2005. It is our
statewide show and a chance for Juniors to exhibit their animals and earn
points for the California Junior Livestock Association as it is a
sanctioned show. The Spring Show junior meeting will take place
immediately following lunch. Look for more information and entry forms on
our website
http://www.californiashorthornjuniors.org .
So Juniors, Seniors, and Shorthorn
enthusiasts. I dare you to look back at last year and then look forward
to next year. Let us continue winning in the show ring and prove that in
California, the Breed to Succeed is Shorthorns
