CJSA President
Whitfield’s
Message
Another successful year in and out of the show ring is ending for all of us
Shorthorn enthusiasts. We started the year off with the CJSA Spring Show,
which was a huge success thanks to our sponsors. Extra special thanks to E.M.
Tharp/Golden State Peterbuilt, who donated money and prizes. Congrats to all
of the winners. We followed by competing successfully in local fairs and
shows.
We have traveled 2,880 miles across the country to participate in the
Shorthorn Jr. Nationals in Harrisburg, PA. While there, Amy Gipe and I did
very well in the photography contest. Brooke Bennett won Showmanship, Amanda
Gipe was selected to represent the ASA overseas in Australia, and Emily
Poncetta got a new digital camera. There was truly something for everyone in
the California delegation at this year’s Junior Nationals.
Then it was off to the CA State Fair. This year’s theme was Poppy Beach,
complete with the California Bear surfing the waves of the delta. The
Shorthorn Jr. show went very well, although we didn’t hold our meeting.
That brings us to the present. We are currently looking forward to a
wonderful Spotlight on Quality Sale and Annual Meeting. We plan to have cow
bingo as our fundraiser this year in addition to our Dessert auction.
Juniors, bring those desserts and don’t forget to bring decorations for the
table-decorating contest. This year’s banquet will be decorated in Halloween
style.
As your California Junior Shorthorn Association President, I would just like
to thank everyone who helped make this year the best yet. Without your
support, we wouldn’t have been able to excel in the many areas that we did.
I need to say thank you to those of you who elected me to lead you for the
2004-2005 season. We had a good year, and good luck to the next group of
officers that we will elect at the Spotlight on Quality, 2005. As I look
back after a year has passed by, I have to wonder, where does the time go?

World Wide Web Advertisements
In
today’s fast paced world, when someone needs to find some information,
where’s the first place they look? I know what you’re thinking: in the
yellow pages or the newspaper. But there is something more convenient and
more and more people are starting to use it. It is called the Internet. You
can type something into Yahoo.com, such
as “California Shorthorns,” and guess who is listed first? That’s right, the
California Junior Shorthorn Association and not too far beyond that is the
California Shorthorn Breeders Association.
What does this
mean? It means that if someone is looking for Shorthorns in California and
they use a search engine, then they will bring up the Junior or the Senior
website. What better way to advertise than on a site that is listed first
on the search engines?
For a limited time,
you can be listed both on the Junior and Senior website for a fee of $15.00.
Your name, address, and phone number will be listed under Featured Breeders
on both sites. For a fee of $20.00, we will list your website and e-mail
address on both sites and add a ranch logo for $5.00 more. If you would like
to have a banner at the top of each content page, which would run at least
once a week, the cost is $50.00.
All proceeds
raised through the sale of Internet advertising will go into the Hosting
Fees and Domain renewals of both the Senior and the Junior site.
MINUTES
California Shorthorn
Breeders Association
Board of Director
Meeting
April 9, 2004 –
Merced, Ca.
The meeting was
called to order at 2:00 p.m. by President Gary Witte.
Directors present
were Witte, G. Cardey, Gipe, D. Cardey, M. Bigelow, Mooney, Pluth, Albiani,
Valdez, Gudel and Dillabo. Absent was F. Bigelow.
Mooney moved to
approve the minutes from the previous meeting. Seconded by Albiani. Motion
carried by voice vote.
Greg Cardey reviewed
the financial report, noting a balance of $8,995.36.
OLD BUSINESS:
None
NEW BUSINESS:
A.
Mooney moved and Gipe seconded that Tim Whitfield have approval to
develop and maintain a website for CSBA at
www.californiashorthornbreeders.org. Tim reported
that the initial cost would be around $130 and around $100 per year after
that. Greg Cardey said that $190 is currently spent on mailing newsletters
per year and money would be saved by not mailing out as many newsletters
anymore as emails would be sent to many people to let them know that the
current newsletter was available on the website. Tim also reported that ad
space could be sold on the website to help defray the cost of the website.
Motion passed by voice vote.
B.
Dillabo moved and Mooney seconded that a steer sweepstakes show
similar to the heifer sweepstakes show be funded at $250 for 1st,
$125 for 2nd, and $50 for all other entries. The effectiveness
of the show would be reviewed the following year. Motion passed by voice
vote.
REPORTS:
Spring Field Day
– Gudel reported that the advisory role for the Junior program had been
transitioned over to himself and Chantalle Albiani. There was $1600 in the
bank account and the CJSA website was up and running. The show in the
morning had a good turnout with 21 heifers and 12 steers shown. Alpha Gipe
reported that in future years the show may have to be moved as the dog show
at the fairgrounds at the same time was expanding every year.
SOQ Sale –Greg Cardey reported that the sale date would be October 29-30th.
As previously agreed by the board, the last weekend in October would be the
new sale weekend. Mike Albiani reported that he would have to check with
the caterer to see if they could still do the dinner as they would be
arriving back from the FFA convention that day. Many compliments were given
on the last dinner, especially the baked potato bar. Nobody had any
objections to Kevin Kimmerling being asked to judge the sale again so Alpha
is to see if Kevin will do it again this year.
Jr. Awards
– Albiani reported that he was in process of using up Jr. awards for the
county fairs that Xanthus had passed on to him. He asked that people give
him names of livestock superintendents at fairs that would need awards. He
also was going to check the list of paid Jr. members and make sure that
their fairs received an award this year.
The meeting was
adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
Respectfully
submitted,
Greg Cardey
