President's Message
By: Gary Witte
Fall
is definitely in the air in the high desert of Nevada. Neighbors in
California have yet to see any rain to transform the dry grass into rich,
green forage for the cattle. CSBA's Spotlight On Quality Sale is just around
the corner. We anticipate another excellent set of Shorthorn cattle to offer
our Jr. and Sr. buyers. Please take the time to note the change of schedule
for the show and sale (Saturday), and the addition of the Jr. Jackpot Show
on Sunday. The Jr. Assn' has been working very hard to make their jackpot
show a success. Lets do all we can as Senior members to support their
efforts. Get the word out in your area to all cattle enthusiasts.... not
just the Shorthorn breeders. We eagerly welcome folks interested in all
breeds of cattle. Nothing like a few good Shorthorn heifers to improve a
Herford or Angus commercial breeding program!
Now for the fun! The Barn Party continue Friday evening after chores. Please
bring a beverage of your choice. The dinner will be provided by Pluth's
Homestead Ranch, Witte Shorthorns, and unofficial honorary member Tami
Sandberg. Tentative menu includes Cliffords Cowboy Chili, fresh baked
cornbread with honey butter, and salads by Tami and Pegi. Consignors; Please
invite your buyers to join us and share in good food and good company.
Saturday evening will be the Annual banquet and Jr. Desert Auction. Junior
members, remember one word for the ladies; CHOCOLATE! Don't forget your
contributions for the Silent Auction. With Thanksgiving and Christmas coming
up, craft items with a holiday "COW" them might just be the ticket!
Looking forward to seeing you all soon. As an Association we can all be
proud that we have excellent cattle to offer, but more than that, we enjoy
being together and sharing in very good activity for ourselves and our
families.
Respectfully,
Gary Witte

Websites!!!
The CSBA website is up and running although I have not been doing a very
good job of keeping it up to date and interesting. The newsletter is always
posted there so you can refer potential Shorthorn Association members to it.
Tim Whitfield has put a Calendar of Events on there for us to keep updated
that we will get to work on. Web site is:
Californiashorthornbreeders.org
The SOQ Sale Catalog will be online this fall and be available to be
downloaded and printed. The current CSBA membership is there also. If you
aren’t on it, you haven’t paid your dues!
If you are interested in advertising on either or both websites please
contact Tim Whitfield at tim@whitfieldenterprises.com and he can help you
out.

REPORTS:
Spring Field Day –Discussion was held as to the date of the Spring Field day
and it was decided to leave the date the same. Alpha reported that Merced
Fair was still fine with it being the same day as the dog show. Alpha Gipe
was thanked for preparing the food and Jake Parnell for being the judge of
the Jr. Show.
SOQ Sale –Kirk Kimmelshue, CJSA President, proposed that the SOQ weekend be
modified to have all SOQ events on Saturday and then have a Jr. Jackpot show
on Sunday, similar to what other breed associations do. He stated that this
would increase Junior participation in the weekend, which has been poor for
several years. Matt Bigelow moved to change the SOQ schedule to accommodate
that format and Dave Dillabo seconded the motion. Much discussion was held
on how to structure the SOQ portion of the weekend to make it work. It was
decided that all SOQ sale cattle processing would have to be done by late
Friday afternoon and all Jr. Jackpot exhibitors would be required to be
present by about 9 on Saturday morning, before the SOQ show would be
scheduled to start. Also, all SOQ entrants would be strongly recommended to
stay through the Jr. show on Sunday. The Shorthorn Sweepstakes show for SOQ
heifers and steers purchased would be held on that Sunday also instead of at
the Field Day the following spring. Motion passed 6-0 with 3 abstentions.
Jr. Awards – Mike Albiani reported that in 2005 he had sent out only 3
awards to fairs but that 4 fairs had already corresponded with him for the
current year.
Membership and Finance Report – Greg Cardey reported that there were 30
members in 2005 and that he needed to look up potential members on the ASA
website to send them membership applications.
CSBA Website – Greg Cardey reported that the site was running fine but wee
needed to do a better job of updating the information and that if we were
organized we could have a “Breeder of the Month” page for breeders to submit
pictures and an accompanying article for it.
The meeting was adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
